Avenue 5 Season 2: Armando Iannucci made the satirical political dramas Veep and The Death of Stalin. In February 2020, he released the absurdist space comedy Avenue 5. When a pandemic shut down the whole world a month later, it reminded me of a sci-fi show about a few strange people who were forced to live alone. Avenue 5 Season 2 Plot
Avenue 5 is Iannuccis second show for HBO. Its about a luxury spaceship cruise captained by the charismatic Ryan Clark, or so everyone thinks until all hell breaks loose (played by Hugh Laurie). In a story that takes place 40 years in the future, when space travel is as common as drinking Pumpkin Spice Lattes every fall, the ship Avenue 5 gets thrown off course by a technical problem and an unexpected death. All of its passengers will be stuck in space longer than planned because of this.
As the passengers lose their minds and the crew tries to get a handle on the situation, crazy and funny things happen. As jungle law threatens to take over the space shuttle, all the secrets and lies start to come out. Some people might not like the dry humour. The show shines a light on a few important cultural blind spots we are dealing with right now, like conspiracy nuts who will deny the truth even when there is scientific and factual proof to the contrary and our societys obvious obsession with looks and money over real competence.
The first season ends with a huge cliffhanger. The fates of the characters are up in the air because they make huge mistakes when they try to fix things. Even though the laws of physics limit what they can do, the story can still go in many different directions. Showrunners can pick up right where we left off or move the story along a bit to show how the characters have been forced to work together or go completely off the rails, Lord of the Flies-style.
