Blonde Movie Controversy: Why Is Blonde on Netflix Getting so Much Criticism?

Blonde Movie Controversy: blonde, with Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe, is one of 2022s most-anticipated movies. The biopic is the first thing Netflix has made that has an 18+ rating. It is a fictionalized version of Marilyn Monroes life, from her marriages to her untimely death in 1962.

Ana de Armas has said that the movie is a brave, unapologetic, and feminist take on [Marilyns] story, and she looks amazing as the Hollywood icon. However, the movie has been criticized for being too sensational about the late stars life.

Many people have said that Hollywood is telling way too many stories about women who have been abused. Biopics and documentaries about the late Brittany Murphy and Whitney Houston have been criticized, as has the movie Pam & Tommy, which was about Pamela Andersons sex tape scandal. So, weve learned a lot about the movies backlash, so here are the most important parts of the Blonde backlash.

It doesnt necessarily follow Marilyns real life, even though its presented as a biopic

Because Blonde is based on a work of fiction by Joyce Carol Oates, many people have said that making it into a movie gives a strange idea of what Monroes life was really like. This is especially true since the movie is called a biopic, even though it is not based on a true story about her life.

Oates herself has said that she distilled some parts of Monroes life, rearranging and making up details to fit the story. For example, both the book and the movie look into the idea that former US Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy killed Marilyn Monroe. There are also rumors that the movie has a scene where she is raped by a Fox studio head, but this is also just a story.

Some people dont like how events in someones life can be changed in this way. One fan tweeted, Blonde is mostly based on a MAKE-BELIEF book about Marilyn Monroe that will make people believe even more lies about her. This movie is NOT a biopic.

A Critic Has Taken Issue with Reviewing It

Due to the films controversial content, critic Grace Randolph said earlier this year that we shouldnt cover it in any way. She called the films attempt to be a biography pretty appalling and a sick fantasy.

Im not covering #Blonde in any capacity

I think an NC-17 violent fantasy about #MarilynMonroe presenting itself as a biography or even if it was upfront about being a fantasy is pretty appalling.

Blondes Director Is Unapologetic for Any Offense Caused

Andrew Dominik has made it clear that he doesnt care much if Blonde upsets people, which may be adding fuel to the fire as people try to figure out what to think about the controversy. In an interview with Screen Daily, he said, Its a tough movie. If the audience doesnt like it, thats a problem with the audience. Its not a political campaign.

He continued, Its an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, which is kind of what you want, right? I want to see the version of the Marilyn Monroe story that is rated NC-17. It could be said that making a movie with adult sexual content that shows a different, made-up version of a womans real life might not be what everyone wants.

It Gives Some Potentially Confusing Messages About Miscarriages and Pregnancy

Blonde had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where reviews mentioned disturbing scenes in which a fetus talks to Marilyn from her uterus right before she miscarries. Critics have said that this could turn off audiences, but it could also bring up old arguments against abortion and upset people who may have had miscarriages.

Andrew, on the other hand, said that the scene was just his way of creating her experience of a reluctant abortion. During an interview with BFI, he said, She wants a child because she wants to save herself. Based on her own mother, her own experience of being a mother will be terrible.

But to her, that baby is real, which is why you see the baby. I dont think the scene would seem as real if that werent the case. She is also having an abortion against her will. That means it would be pretty bad. Im trying to put myself in her shoes. I want to make the audience feel the same way. I dont care about having good taste.

Basically, Shouldnt We Just Let Marilyn Rest?

Most of all, critics and Marilyn fans have said that the way this movie was made and marketed could be adding to a story about how the star was used when she was alive.

Even more so because this isnt the first time this year that her legacy has been brought back into the present, with mixed results. Reports say that Kim Kardashian wore and messed up a famous dress that Marilyn wore to the Met Gala in 2022. This led some people to say that the legacy should be left alone.

People seem to be worried that Blonde doesnt tell the whole truth about Marilyns life and doesnt honor her as well as it could. It also might not show the full extent of how she was used when she was alive. Some people have said that the movie is another way that other people are using her talent to make money.

One tweet says, Let Hollywood tell us how bad Hollywood was to this woman. Even though she has been dead for decades, people are still making money off of her image.
