Jameela Jamil Criticises the Met Galas 2023 Theme, Which Honours Late Designer Karl Lagerfeld.

Jamil voiced her displeasure on social media after it was reported last week that the events theme will honor late fashion legend, Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfield, who died in 2019, was a well-known creative director at Chanel, the French luxury fashion business.

While the Met Galas spotlight on Lagerfeld delighted many fashion lovers, it also irritated some, including Jamil, who charged Lagerfelds history of insulting women and minorities. On Sunday, Jamil shared a lengthy Instagram post with an image of Lagerfeld and the caption Nope.

Lagerfeld used his platform in such a uniquely hostile way, mostly toward women, so repeatedly and up until the latter years of his life, displaying no remorse, offering no atonement, no apology, no support to groups he attacked there was no justification for his vicious outbursts, according to Jamil.

To bolster her case, the actress included eight images of Lagerfelds past interviews. The designer remarked in a 2009 interview with the German magazine Focus that no one wants to see curvaceous women on the runway.

Youve got fat mums with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television complaining that slender models are awful, Lagerfeld added in the same interview. The world of gorgeous apparel is full of illusions and dreams. In 2018, he told the fashion magazine Numero, If you dont want your pants pushed up, dont be a model! and instead suggested they join a nunnery.

Jamil also criticized Lagerfelds alleged treatment of vulnerable communities, such as when he termed Muslim refugees disgusting. Why are we celebrating THIS when there are so many AMAZING designers out there who arent prejudiced white men? the actress wondered in her post.

Sorry, but no, Jamil concluded her message. Its not the 1990s anymore. We didnt go through all of our efforts just to throw it all away because some white guy made some nice garments for peoples skinny faves Now, come on.

Commenters praised Jamil for shining light on a subject that apparently few were aware of. Wow. I was completely unaware of any of this. Vogue, on the other hand, had to! It is their responsibility to know!!! one commenter said

I adore you, Jameela. For years, your courage and willingness to speak have inspired me. Thank you for this article and for everything youve done with your platform, said another user.
