Dietrich Mateschitz, co-owner of Red Bull, passed away at the age of 78. The Austrian entrepreneur, who was crucial to Red Bulls Formula One participation, had been fighting a chronic illness.

Red Bull employees were informed of his passing before qualifying for Sundays United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin.

In 1984, Mateschitz launched the energy drink firm. Twenty years later, he purchased the Jaguar F1 team and rebranded it Red Bull Racing for the next season.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won his second consecutive championship in the Japanese Grand Prix earlier this month, and the team is poised to clinch the constructors title this weekend.
