Sniper Elite 5 Preview: In Sniper Elite 4, the stealth series saw a major shift to an open-world setting. It was the first game released following Metal Gear Solid V, and it carried over many of Hideo Kojima’s design cues from that game. Even though Sniper Elite 4 lacked the polish and depth of its predecessor, it was nonetheless a respectable substitute. Even though Sniper Elite 5 is marketed as a more improved sequel, the game’s overall focus appears misplaced.
However, the fundamentals remain very accurate. Karl Fairburne can aim and shoot slightly more efficiently than in previous games, therefore the aiming is fluid. It’s now feasible for Sniper Elite to use weapons other than a sniper rifle in first-person mode, making the whole armament a little more precise and in keeping with the shtick of Sniper Elite. Since these guns’ crosshairs are too large to achieve a consistent dot, this is a boon.
Fairburne can still crouch, crawl, and climb to have a better view from one of the game’s hills or perches. Rebellion Developments stated it planned to expand these possibilities to better connect with the game’s stealth components. The French château on one of the levels shows this nicely, with vines and ladders strewn throughout the vertical nature of the edifice. A comprehensive exploration of the level would take hours, but there looked to be enough to make it more than a simple shooter. One run isn’t enough to adequately judge the depth of the Hitman games, but it appears to be on the right route.
With the series’ storytelling talents, the latter may not be worth the extra time pilfering. But some of these interactions will reveal more about the quest, thus sneaking around may have some gameplay rewards. These can be completely missed by players, but Rebellion claims it’s part of the sandbox’s appeal.
“It’s all about giving the player alternatives so they may tackle each aspect of the quest in their own manner. As shown in previous play sessions, no two players approach the game in the same manner, because to the sandbox aspect of the gameplay. While some players want to be cautious and plan ahead of time, others prefer to ‘run and gun.’ We aim to cater to all players.”

This includes the settings. So snipers may make the game as easy or as challenging as they want. These elements aren’t totally novel, but it’s fantastic to see a game like this push into its hardcore origins while still appealing to folks outside of that niche.
This includes its new Invasion mode, which, like Dark Souls or Deathloop, randomly drops a human opponent. While not seen in the video, this may offer a level of intensity that A.I. just cannot equal. Rebellion claimed it had been considering it and appreciated the stories it could tell. During testing, one invader emulated the A.I. by marching rigorously along a path, fooling the other player and killing the host.

Whether it’s sniping an invader or an opposing soldier, long-range shooting is still a key aspect of the game. The franchise’s trademark slow motion death cam zooms into the action and allows players get up up and personal with stomachs bursting and testicles exploding. Even though this method has been present since the initial entry, it still works well as a reward for hitting a goal. On how Rebellion has evolved this wonderful approach (which they compared to scoring a goal in FIFA), Rebellion exaggerated.
“Bullets now bounce off bones, causing much more damage, since you can see more detail on the skeleton in Sniper Elite 5. For the first time, our community has requested a kill cam for great SMG and pistol kills. Their incorporation seemed natural throughout testing and delivers excellent joy when you hit a shot.”
While witnessing Nazi guts being pureed in slow motion is satisfying, Sniper Elite 5 also allows for non-lethal takedowns and ammunition kinds. Choosing to spare a group as terrible as the Nazis may be a theoretical gain in this case, given the lack of a narrative reason. Stealth games like Dishonored or Hitman make killing vs not killing a difficult decision. But Nazis aren’t difficult, which is one of the reasons World War II is a popular scenario for video games.
Notably lacking in gameplay reasons to appease them, although its sandbox and arsenal have the potential to unfold with time. It appears to be an optional task that participants might choose to take on. When asked about it, Rebellion claimed it discovered through testing that not everyone wants to go on a killing spree. Main drives were replayability and flexibility.
“The non-lethal choices are there to provide the player choice in how they play the game. With so many ‘toys’ in Sniper Elite 5, we want to let the user decide how they approach each mission and scenario. In addition, non-lethal alternatives enable players to repeat missions and replay them with a fresh strategy and play style.
There were several abnormalities in the sandbox that held it back. It might be brilliant, terribly foolish, or cheap. A corpse in an empty basement provoked a security cavalcade from the top levels, which is both irritating and ludicrous. In some areas of the levels, there is a lot of open space, making it simple for opponents to detect you. It’s hard to shake an unquantifiable layer of cruft that includes erratic hit detection, untimely autosaves during firefights, and other quirks.
Sniper Elite 5 isn’t the only Rebellion game to have flaws like these, despite though it appears to be one of the studio’s better titles. Its apparent attempts to oust Snake from the throne of open-world stealth are impossible to ignore. But there are worse games to draw from, and Sniper Elite 5 has its own charm, though often obscured by jank. It simply remains to be seen if that fog is dense enough to throw off the shot of this long-running sniper series.
