Grey’s Anatomy Season 17: Grey’s Anatomy season 17 has already thrown us for a loop after six episodes, with more twists, turns, and sad moments than we could have reasonably anticipated.
Despite the fact that the ABC medical drama is currently on hiatus, viewers are eager to see what happens next after the disastrous winter finale episode. (Does Meredith appear to be doing well? Is everything going to be okay? Who will be the next to show up on the beach?)
Viewers will have to wait until March to find out what happens next due to pandemic-related delays and the fact that season 17 will be a shortened season.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Total Episodes
According to showrunner Krista Vernoff, who spoke to Deadline about the situation, fans will have to wait 11 weeks to find out what happens next to Meredith Grey while she is being treated for COVID-19 infection. It’s all because season 17 has fewer episodes than previous seasons.
According to reports, Grey’s Anatomy season 17 will only have 16 episodes instead of the usual 24. This season, along with season 1, which had nine episodes, has the shortest runtime in the show’s history.
Because of the delayed premiere date, 6 episodes were broadcast prior to the scheduled winter hiatus, and due to the shortened episode count, the remaining episodes will air in March rather than January in order for the season to conclude in time for May’s finale season to be broadcast.
Even as Meredith fights COVID-19, she will return to her idyllic beach home in Florida on a regular basis. According to the show’s schedule, Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd will appear in a few more episodes. According to Entertainment Weekly, Vernoff has also hinted that more former figures may appear on Meredith’s beach in the future.
Derek and George O’Malley have already appeared on the show. There have also been appearances by Richard Webber and Miranda Bailey, confirming that Meredith is dreaming about both deceased and living people. Fans have a long wish list of characters they’d like to see return, with Chyler Leigh’s Lexie Grey at the top.

The Season 17 finale of Grey’s Anatomy is still up in the air at the moment. ABC has not yet renewed Season 18 of the popular medical drama. Meanwhile, according to Variety, Vernoff hinted that the final episode could serve as both a season finale and a series finale. The showrunner stated in March, according to The Hollywood Reporter:
I’m working on a season and a finale that, depending on how it’s structured, could serve as a season finale or a series finale. I’m preparing for both scenarios, which is difficult and inconvenient. It’s not where I’d like us to be at the moment. I’ve informed [ABC executives] that I need to know what we’re working on before I begin work on the season finale.
Because a couple of character arcs will be changed in this game. Either there will be a satisfying conclusion, or I will include something that will allow me to leave a bit of a cliffhanger and a thread for the next season.
Meanwhile, Chandra Wilson (who plays Miranda Bailey) revealed on Live with Kelly and Ryan in late March that the Grey’s Anatomy cast is still unsure whether the show will return.
Wilson responded to a question about Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 by saying, “We’ll find out when ABC makes their announcement.” “And not even a fraction of a second before.”
