The Teams Who Have Impressed the Most in the World Cup so Far

In no particular order, the following teams have made impressive starts and, aiming at victory, have proceeded to the knockouts.

Brazil

Brazil qualified for the next round after winning both games at the 2022 FIFA World Cup men’s football against Serbia and Switzerland. They currently top the group with a game against Cameroon.

On Thursday, November 25, the five-time world champions started their campaign with a 2-0 win over Serbia. Richarlison, who was on crutches just a few weeks before the match, was the star man for Brazil, scoring two goals.

The Tottenham forward and the striker scored both game goals in the second half. The awning goal was a beautiful bicycle kick that sealed the win and lit up the match. It could as well be a contender for the strike of the tournament.

Brazil went on to win their second group match against Switzerland on Monday, November 28, in a 1-0 victory. They overcame the absence of their injured star player, Neymar, to beat Switzerland with a late goal from Casemiro in the 83rd minute.

The win guaranteed the five-time world champions a place in the knockout stages of the Qatar World Cup.

France

France qualified after winning both of their first two matches.

They were joined later by Brazil and Portugal just 48 hours later, leaving 13 spots for those also interested in winning the trophy. This is the first time for the men’s football World Cup holders since Brazil at Germany 2006 to still have a game to spare after qualification.

The defending champions became the first team to qualify for the knockout stages at the Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 and have secured their space in the knockout stages. This was after their 2-1 victory over Denmark on Saturday, November 26. A late strike from Kylian Mbappe condemned Denmark to a 2-1 defeat at Stadium 974.

Portugal

Portugal became the third team to reach the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup after beating Uruguay in a 2-0 victory which they did quite comfortably. The victory also gives them a group game to spare.

In their 3-2 win against Ghana, Ronaldo, the all-time UEFA top scorer, scored a controversial penalty for Portugal. In the match between Portugal and Uruguay, Bruno Fernandes was crowned man of the match after he scored a double against Uruguay, ensuring his country joined France and Brazil in qualifying for the knockout stages in Qatar.

Portugal will face South Korea, and Ghana will take on Uruguay. The group stage matches come to an end on Friday, December 2.

Spain

In the Qatar 2022 World Cup tournament, Spain was among the top five favourites. A primary reason for this could have been because of their squad. It was predicted that they would be a real threat to any team they came across, having great players and lots of talent at their disposal.

They were placed in Group E ahead of the tournament, along with Germany, Japan, and Costa Rica. They made the perfect start to their FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign with a 7-0 convincing win over Costa Rica. They followed that up with a 1-1 draw with Germany in the second round of fixtures to remain at the top of the Group E table.

That massive win has increased their chances of winning the World Cup. With how they’re faring, it won’t be a surprise if Spain goes all the way in the World Cup this year.

England

England, looking to win their first World Cup title since 1966, made a beautiful start to their FIFA World Cup campaign against Iran with a 6-2 victory. So naturally, high expectations were raised with this start.

Ranked among the top-five teams in the world, England reached the semi-finals in Russia in 2018 and the Euro 2020 final last year. They were drawn with Iran, the United States, and Wales in Group B and held off a strong challenge from the organized and tenacious US defense team.

The United States and England played a 0-0 draw in their Group B encounter, leaving both sides to work to get to the remaining 16. However, England got the point from their goalless draw, cementing their position at the top of their group.
