Mermaid from The Masked Singer Regrets Not Concealing Her Amazing Voice

The Mermaid has left the domain of the Masked Singer. The stunning outfit was sent home second on the shows Andrew Lloyd Webber-themed night, behind the Maize mask. Mario Cantone, star of Sex and the City, was discovered to be the glam ear of corn.

This meant that Robo Girl and Mermaid were sent to this weeks Battle Royale, where they sang their own versions of Evitas iconic ballad, Dont Cry for Me Argentina. Finally, Robo Girl won to go to the following show, and Mermaid was unmasked to reveal famous two-time Grammy winner Gloria Gaynor.

EW spoke with Gaynor about her reaction to the crazy predictions, what she would do differently if she could compete again, and her favorite rendition of her smash I Will Survive.

Entertainment Weekly:What Was Your Gut Reaction when You Got the Call to Do the Show?

GLORIA GAYNOR: I was delighted to do it. I mean, Ive seen it several times. I dont get to watch it as much as Id like because of my travel, but I believe its a great program. I was curious as to what type of outfit they would make for me. Is anyone familiar with my voice? That sort of thing. I just wanted to be a part of it.

Im not sure if youre aware, but they constantly guess you on the program. And then, when youre actually on TMS, Andrew Lloyd Webber is certain youre a different renowned Gloria, Gloria Estefan. Were you giggling beneath the mask?

Gloria and I dont sound anything similar! Who has a chance if his expert ear doesnt pick it up?

Finally, panelists Robin Thicke and Nicole Scherzinger guessed you properly. What were your emotions like at the time?

It was a really mixed bag of feelings. I wanted to remain on longer because youd like to know that others recognize your voice. So there were conflicting feelings about it. I wasnt shocked that Robin [Thicke] had picked up on my voice. Because he attended my show. And he was completely insane at the show. [Laughs] But that was simply something pleasant to do. It was true.

Were you nervous about performing Andrew Lloyd Webbers song in front of him?

No way, no how No, I was not frightened. I was overjoyed at the prospect. I assumed Id do well with it. And I hoped hed be satisfied with the work I did with it, which I believe he was. That song was a lot of fun to perform. It was entertaining. It was memorable. It was lovely. It was unlike anything Id ever done before. So it was a lot of fun, and it was an honor to perform that in front of him and for him.

For a long time, people have been asking for a Mermaid mask. Did you have any say in the outfit, and what did you think of it?

I had no clue what it was going to be I knew it was going to be a mermaid, but I had no idea what it would look like, and when I went there and saw it, I fell in love. I mean, I believe thats the nicest outfit theyve ever had. I thought it was fantastic. And I was overjoyed when the audience enjoyed it as well.

I Will Survive, your classic hit, is such a pop cultural fixture that its been covered innumerable times in various ways. Do you have a favorite rendition?

Chantay Savages is my favorite. I like the fact that she made it her own. Then, only last week, I watched someone repeat it on, I believe, TikTok. And oh my god, she put so much effort into it that I thought if this girl isnt an actor, she should be because she communicated the lines so well I believe she is British. But I think she did an excellent job acting it out. It was fantastic.

Do you have any recommendations for future Masked Singer participants now that youve completed the show?

If you want to survive longer than one episode and are well-known, you should strive to mask your voice. Because these folks are excellent. They know a lot of artists and entertainers, and theyre really excellent at predicting. So, if you dont want to be guessed, you need to do anything to conceal your voice. That was not my intention.

Do You Wish You Would Had?

Yes, since I wanted to stay on longer.

What Would You Have Sung if Youd Gone on In the Competition?

I wanted to perform two songs. Unstoppable was one of them. The other was Harriets Stand Up by Cynthia Erivo. That was something I really wanted to accomplish. First and foremost, I believe its a fantastic song. Second, I never had the opportunity. I dont perform songs like that; theyre not in my repertoire. And that type of tune truly showcases your vocal prowess. Its simply a fantastic tune. So I was sorry I couldnt do it. Maybe Ill include it in my show.

What Did You Take From This Experience, Personally?

That the audience liked me, and it was simply a good time. So I wasnt expecting to learn anything philosophical from it, but as I previously stated, if I had given it more attention, I would have masked my voice. But its all in good humor. You know, just relax and enjoy yourself.
