Steve Lacy Controversy: A Hip-Hop Artist, Says Hes BisexualBut Would Never Date a Black Man

Steve Lacy Controversy: Steve Lacy is getting praise in many ways: The 19-year-old member of the Internet has produced songs for Kendrick Lamar and Vampire Weekend, released his first solo album, Steve Lacys Demo, and made waves with his trippy single 4Real.

He is also one of a growing number of men in the hip-hop scene who are comfortable talking about being bisexual. This summer, Lacy was asked in a Tumblr post if he was straight or bisexual. He replied, Im human.

When asked if he would date a guy, he said, Sure, why not? But it was the talk about what kind of guys he would date that caused a stir: Lacy said that he doesnt want to date black men.

Okay, I get that its a matter of taste for you, One commenter said, But dont you think you owe it to yourself to change the things that make you want to date white people over black people?

Lacy Pushed Back Against the Idea

He was biased. The reason for it all isnt at all anti-black, he said He answered. As I grew up with black men, they were always my rivals, you know? I never thought or imagined that I would do something sexual with a neighbor. I really do think of them as brothers, as I said before.

This is not made up, even if you or someone else thinks it is, he said. Im a nigga from Compton. I dont dislike black people. In fact, I love black people so much that I prefer to live here and be around POC. I just dont like black boys, thats all. Even though we wont be dating, I still love them and want them to do well in life. Sorry.

He is making a generalization when he compares a whole group of people to the few he has grown up with. Lacy is wrong when he says that every black boy in the world is like the people he grew up with. That would be like if I met one person of color who said they hated black people and thought, Everyone in that community is racist. Not okay.

Perry says that Lacy is internalizing and reinforcing a racial hierarchy by acting almost as if hes too good to date black men, that theyre below him.

A preference is just what it sounds like: a choice. Developed through the unique and individual experiences of each person. If youre not a gay black man from Compton who grew up just like Steve Lacy, you might not understand where hes coming from.

Why Stop Him?

He SAYS that he thinks of black men as his brothers. If he said he couldnt stand black men, Id be mad. But thisthis makes sense. In almost all black communities, being gay isnt celebrated or seen as a good thing. No one knows when Steve first knew he was gay. No one knows how Steve found out he was gay.

Lacy eventually said that he wasnt going to answer any more questions about his sexuality because they were all answered on his blog. On Twitter, he said that people should just let kids be themselves without having to say what/who theyre into sexually.
