During its 15-season run from 2005 to 2020, CBS’ “Criminal Minds” was a huge hit. The FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) uses their top profiling skills to crack complex cases and track down dangerous “unsub” perpetrators in this police procedural.
While the show’s criminal-investigation aspect is its primary focus, its ensemble of characters is without a doubt what makes it such a committed fanbase’s favorite.
Throughout the show’s run, viewers followed Hotch (Thomas Gibson), JJ (A.J. Cook), Prentiss (Paget Brewster), Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler), and Rossi’s team dynamics and personal challenges and tribulations (Joe Mantegna).
However, one particular friendship between Shemar Moore’s Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) Derek Morgan and Technical Analyst turned Special Agent Penelope Garcia struck a chord with viewers (Kirsten Vangsness).
Morgan, who specializes in obsessional crimes and explosives, and former hacker Garcia (nicknamed “The Black Queen”) have a deep bond that stretches over 11 seasons of the show. They confide in each other, dispute, encourage and protect each other, and participate in a constant game of playful banter.
Fans like the couple, and many are wondering if it goes beyond the screen. To put it another way, are Shemar Moore and Kirsten Vangsness real-life friends?
Shemar Moore and Kirsten Vangsness are still friends in real life.
Vangsness told Parade in an interview that she and Moore hit it off right away at her first table read for the role of Garcia.
In fact, authors were inspired to develop the pair’s romance on-screen after noticing their chemistry during the read. “I get a call later that night. ‘You have new script pages,’ they say. ‘That’s strange,’ I thought “she stated “Then they sent me this rewrite, which contained some of the work I was doing with Shemar. The next day, we shot together and were like, ‘Oh, my gosh.’ We’ve got chemistry.'”
Vangsness went on to say how precious the friendship had grown for both “Criminal Minds” fans and herself. “I believe that we both recognize how unique that relationship is.
And, honestly, I wouldn’t have this job if it weren’t for Shemar, if it weren’t for Morgan and Penelope’s chemistry. It’s the most delectable, amazing, and cool male/female relationship ever.”
Vangsness and Moore’s friendship has lasted to this day, and the two are still close.
