The Channel Awesome Scandal And Those Misconduct Allegations

Some readers may be familiar with Channel Awesome, an independent American media outlet with a YouTube channel of the same name. Founded by Doug Walker, better known as “That Guy with the Glasses” or “The Nostalgia Critic,” the company has grown into a popular movie, television, and games review platform over the last decade. Many of the company’s videos feature Doug Walker, better known as “That Guy with the Glasses” or “The Nostalgia Critic.”

Before its current iteration, the brand had a typical internet history, with Walker, his brother Rob, and the current CEO, Mike Michaud, leading it through numerous phases. Between 2010 and 2015, the site featured a number of contributions from people who went on to become YouTube stars in their own right, including Andrew Dickman (of Electronic Heroes), Kyle Kallgren (Oancitizen), Allison Pregler (of Obscurus Lupa Presents and later Movie Nights), Phelan Porteus (of Perlous), and Lindsay Ellis (of Perlous) (The Nostalgia Chick).

Unfortunately, this appears to have been a particularly turbulent period for the ostensibly cooperative company, with a file leaked on Google Docs now revealing a number of prior charges of misbehavior against its management. Many of the show’s prior hosts, most notably Allison Pregler, have been blamed for this.

As with any complaint of this sort, the situation is a shambles, with a fair amount of in-group presumption. In other words, there is an unjustified assumption that others are familiar with the names and incidents mentioned. Which isn’t often the case (I had no idea Lindsay Ellis started her web career with Doug Walker in 2008, for example).

Quinton Reviews, a former Channel Awesome fan, gives a solid overview of the claims, plucking out the complex strands that compose the story’s background. As one might anticipate, the dispute has sparked a lot of discussion among YouTube users and content creators, with opposing sides expressing strong opinions. And willing to take action based on those beliefs.
