Ms. Foster’s home state of California is among the 18 U.S. states and the District of Columbia in which lesbian marriage is permitted.

Jodie Foster was born as Alicia Christian Foster in Los Angeles, California on November 19, 1962. She was the youngest child of Evelyn and Lucius, who divorced before her birth and had no other children. Foster is of Irish, English, and German descent, as well as a descendent of John Alden, a passenger on the Mayflower.

She has three full siblings named Lucinda, Constance, and Lucius, in addition to three half-brothers from her father’s previous marriage. Foster, a smart youngster, began reading at the age of three. At the same age, she made her first television commercial appearance for Coppertone. This led to other advertising appearances and, in 1968, a small role on the sitcom “Mayberry R.F.D.”

She then appeared in “Kansas City Bomber,” “One Little Indian,” “Tom Sawyer,” and “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” by Martin Scorsese.

Foster attended the French-language preparatory school Lycée Francais de Los Angeles, where she graduated in 1980 as valedictorian. She then attended at Yale University with a concentration in African-American literature; she graduated with honors in 1985.
