Why Evander Kane should not be given another opportunity to play in the NHL

Evander Kane has been dogged by trouble throughout his NHL career.

Kane was selected fourth overall in the 2009 NHL Draft due to his talent, and the Atlanta Thrashers saw him as a future star. However, just a few years after making his NHL debut, the winger made headlines for all the wrong reasons, despite the fact that clubs continued to give him opportunities due to his on-ice ability.

He has been given second, third, fourth, and numerous more opportunities due of his abilities. After his contract with the San Jose Sharks was terminated due to his off-ice issues, NHL teams are once again lining up to sign the troublesome forward.

Evander Kane’s legal and maturity troubles prior to this time

Kane was sued by a 21-year-old Buffalo woman a year after being traded to the Sabres, alleging that the Sabres’ forward assaulted her inside his hotel room in December 2015, causing “severe emotional trauma” and “serious, permanent, and painful personal injuries.” Kane was later exonerated of any criminal activity following a police inquiry. Kane did not receive a wake-up call as a result of the charges.

He also got into difficulties with the team a few months later. Kane’s lack of maturity surfaced again after he attended the NBA All-Star Game in Toronto and posted videos of himself inebriated following the event. For sleeping in and missing practice, he was suspended by the team.

Evander Kane’s numbers for the 2020-2021 season are as follows: 22 goals, 27 assists in 56 games.

Kane was charged with harassment at a bar in July 2016, after three women claimed he grabbed them by the neck, hair, and arms in an attempt to drag them outside. Four counts of non-criminal harassment were filed against him, and he pleaded not guilty. After the charges were dropped, the matter was closed.

Buffalo wanted to move on from Kane as his play deteriorated and legal concerns grew increasingly common. In February 2018, he was dealt to the San Jose Sharks, with another team ready to overlook his behavioral difficulties and numerous off-ice claims in exchange for a talented player.

Why Evander Kane should not be given another opportunity to play in the NHL

In 2018, Kane was sued for allegedly violating an abortion contract by refusing to pay a lady the guaranteed $3 million if she did not have the baby. It happened a year after Kane allegedly ‘pressured’ her into having a second abortion because having a child would jeopardize his NHL career.

A Las Vegas casino later sued Kane in 2019, accusing him of failing to pay $500,000 in gambling debts. It turned out to be the tip of the iceberg in terms of his gambling and financial woes.

Kane was reported to be bankrupt, owing more than $100 million in gambling debts. His problems were exacerbated when his estranged wife said he was betting on his own games (though the NHL could find no evidence of such bets). During the 2020-2021 season, Kane’s teammates reportedly pressured the front office to trade him since they despised him.

The NHL punished him for 21 games before the 2021-’22 season for breaking the NHL/NHLPA COVID-19 standards. However, there have been many reports that Kane provided a forged vaccination card.

Following his suspension, the Sharks assigned him to their AHL affiliate. Kane couldn’t keep out of trouble, and after travelling to Vancouver from the US on the 29th, less than 10 days after testing positive for COVID-19, he broke protocol once more. The flight was in flagrant breach of the AHL’s 10-day quarantine requirement. Kane’s contract was terminated by the Sharks after many infractions of NHL regulations and several off-ice concerns.

Even though the NHLPA has filed a grievance on his behalf, it’s difficult to deny the truth: Evander Kane creates a ruckus wherever he goes. By signing him, you are agreeing to a reward wheel whose prizes aren’t prizes at all, but rather questionable behavior and numerous scandals.

Kane has been the subject of yet another investigation into how he crossed the border on the 29th, with the Sharks claiming that he did not have sufficient medical clearance to do so. But it’s not that he’s broken yet another rule that’s shocking. The most alarming aspect is that it puts a team’s ability to sign Evander Kane on hold.

Despite his troubling history, NHL organizations still covet Evander Kane

Why Evander Kane should not be given another opportunity to play in the NHL

The Edmonton Oilers, whose general manager Ken Holland believes in second chances, are one of the teams who have indicated strong interest in signing Kane. In principle, it’s a fine idea, but Kane’s second chance is a long way off. It isn’t even his fifth year. Connor McDavid, the NHL’s new face, appears to concur with Holland.

By allowing Kane to sneak back into the league relatively unscathed, the NHL is sending a message that immoral behavior is unpunishable. The NHL has already been chastised for how it handled the investigation into the Chicago Blackhawks’ assault controversy, and giving Kane a second opportunity (again, far from a second chance) would only make matters worse.

Why Evander Kane should not be given another opportunity to play in the NHL

The Oilers aren’t the only ones who want to sign Kane. The Vegas Golden Knights, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, and Tampa Bay Lightning are among six teams interested in signing Kane. They are the favorites to sign him.

Evander Kane has demonstrated that he will not change as long as he is permitted to glide by with no consequences. It’s perplexing that another team would want to sign him, especially since his offensive production has dwindled in the midst of his woes (though that shouldn’t be a consideration, but it is in today’s sports). It’s like walking into a situation knowing you’re unprepared for what’s about to happen.

Even if a team is interested in Kane, the NHL should intervene and prevent him from playing. There is evidence that he broke the league’s rules by presenting a forged immunization card. There is proof that he broke the AHL rules. His former teams have been known to have issues with him, and there have even been claims that his Sharks teammates refused to play with him.

The Edmonton Oilers should not be allowed to sign him because of his behavior in court, which included frequently breaking protocols, missing practices, and overall portraying the league poorly. Enough is enough, and Evander Kane has had more than his fair share of chances to make amends. The regrettable reality is that he is unwilling to take advantage of the opportunities that have been presented to him.
